Odds, tips and preview for the third day’s racing

Can you believe it’s Day Three of the Cheltenham Festival already? We’ve already seen thrills, spills, breakout stars and stunning runs from fancied favourites – and St Patrick’s Day promises more of the same.

The St Patrick’s day action gets off to a flier with the Marsh Novices’ Chase at 13:30, followed by the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle at 14:10 and the Ryanair Chase at 14:50. The day’s big feature race is the Stayers’ Hurdle at 15:30.

After that is the Brown Advisory and Merriebelle Stable Plate at 16:10, followed by the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at 16:50. The final race of the day is the Kim Muir Handicap Chase at 17:30.

We’ve analysed the runners, riders and the rest and here are tips for Day Three of the Festival…

Faugheen – 13:30 Marsh Novices’ Chase

It’s hard to look beyond Willie Mullins’ 12-year-old Faugheen – the former Champion Hurdle winner switched to chasing back in November and has romped home in all three races since making the switch, with Grade 1 wins at Limerick and Leopardstown.

‘The Machine’ beat out challenger Samcro in Limerick, but the latter’s recent wind-op could see an improved performance this time out. The Coral Champions Club’s Annie Mc is something of an outsider in the race, but our ambassador Chris Hughes thinks she could surprise everyone

Itchy Feet has looked a strong contender since making the switch to chasing. The Olly Murphy trained six-year-old impressed in a Grade 1 win in the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase, beating Midnight Shadow in the process – and is a favourite for this race among form-watchers.

Frodon – 14:50 Ryanair Chase

Defending champion Frodon’s Cheltenham victory last year was one of the festival highlights, with Bryony Frost making history as the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race at the Cheltenham Festival. Last year’s second-placed runner Aso returns to renew the rivalry, after losing by a length and a quarter in 2019.

A major challenge this time out can be expected from A Plus Tard, winner of last year’s Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase by an astonishing 16 lengths. An impressive run at Leopardstown last time out suggests the form is there, but the longer run here could prove an obstacle.

Paisley Park – 15:30 Stayers’ Hurdle

Will we see a repeat of last year’s so-called ‘Golden Hour’ at Cheltenham with Paisley Park following Frodon to victory? What a story that would be. The popular eight-year-old goes into this race as heavy favourite and has a flair for the dramatic – often coming from behind and claiming victory to thrilling effect.

Long-term rival Summertime Boy will be looking to spoil the party after finishing second in the Cleeve Stayers’ Hurdle, while 2018 winner Penhill returns after being unable to defend the title last year. Emitom looks to be a promising contender too, after an excellent performance in the Rendlesham Hurdle at Haydock.
